Phytoplankton

Phytoplankton as an aquatic bio indicator

The ecological role played by phytoplankton is fundamental; it is the “key” regulating the power input into the system, constituting the base of the food pyramid. Therefore its study enables more precise and detailed information on the trophic state and quality of the water to be obtained than that from a simple hydro chemical study. Therefore, it is considered a good bio indicator of the ecological state and of the pollution in lakes and wetlands and, its study has become an essential part of any project of ecological characterisation in lentic water masses.

Treatment of Phytoplankton samples

In Cimera’s laboratories the identification and enumeration of phytoplankton species present in samples of lakes and reservoirs is performed. Testing procedures are based on the regulations in force, based on the technique described by Utermöhl in counting and sedimentation chambers using an inverted microscope. This work is performed by qualified, experienced personnel, experts in taking samples, identification and taxonomy of microscopic algae.

Analysis of results

For the analysis of data obtained, Cimera has self-developed computer software called INDAT, which enables quick and efficient management of the results. Thanks to this, remote incorporation and consultation of identification results, indexes or metres installed is possible in real time.

For the purpose of extracting the maximum amount of information possible from the data obtained in phytoplankton determinations, in the report of results the application originates a set of descriptions:

  • Determination of the phytoplankton’s taxonomic composition.
  • Abundance of each species.
  • Bio volumes of each species and total.
  • Potential toxicity of each species.
  • Trophic state of the water mass.
  • Metrics: % Chlorophytas %, Cyanophytas,% Diatoms, etc.
  • Indexes of phytoplankton.
